Kano Pillars Basketball Club and First Bank Basketball Club of Nigeria have retained their men and women’s titles at the 2016 FIBA Africa Zone Three Club Championships in Togo. The competition ended on Sunday.
The two teams, along with runners-ups Customs Basketball Club of Nigeria and Etoile Filante Basketball Club of Togo, will represent the zone in the men and women’s FIBA Africa Club Champions Cup later in the year.
Customs will be making their first appearance in the continental club tournament after winning three matches and losing two.
The women’s ACC will be held in Mozambique from November 26 to December 4 while the men’s
tournament will hold in Egypt from December 8 to 17.
Pillars were unbeaten as they defended their title in style. They defeated the five other teams in the men’s competition to qualify for their third consecutive ACC finals. Pillars beat Elain Sportif Club of Benin Republic 90-75 before defeating AS Modele of Togo 82-48. The champions beat Customs 80-60 before beating Niger Republic side, AS NIGELEC, 71-47 and ASPAC of Benin Republic on Saturday.
First Bank were also unbeaten in the women’s category, which was played in a round robin format. The Elephant Girls beat STT SC of Niger Republic 104-38 in the first round before the same team 103-58. They also beat Etoile Filante of Togo 74-43 in their first match before defeating them 68-39 in the second match on Saturday.
