Tears of a hero Laura Bassett. |
Laura Bassett suffered a heartbreak in front of millions of tv viewers who watched her break down in tears after a terrible own goal. But Laura Basset was not the only one in tears in the early morning of thursday 2nd of july in Canada. So many people who had stayed up to watch England play Japan in the women world cup semi final must have felt so sorry for Laura Bassett. It's hard seeing someone break down like that without emotions getting to you.I must say,i had tears in my eyes as well. The way it happened was so cruel,Laura Bassett was arguably England's best player on the night with her
defensive work.To see all that cut off with a last minute own goal was really sad to watch.

Laura Bassett inconsolable after own goal. |
Mark Sampson the England coach should have asked his girls to keep the ball with numbers behind the ball. That was an own goal on hthe coach's path.In hindsight,he must have seen that now.
The welshman Sampson was clearly taken by the manner in which they lost,i watched him teary eyed with an unbelievable look on his face when that goal went in..In Laura Bassett's unfortunate moment,Mark Sampson had this to say...
"It really is heartbreaking. I'm so proud of them,"
"Laura Bassett's name is on that scoresheet but she has epitomised the team," Sampson said. "She has been courageous and strong.
"It is a horrible moment for Laura but you can see how her team-mates regard her by their reaction. When that ball went over line, we were devastated but the first point of call was to look after your own.
"We get around her, let her cry, tell her how proud of her we are, because without her we wouldn't be here in this semi-final. She was outstanding over the tournament and we will be there for her.
"Anyone who knows Laura would be privileged to have her in their life. She's a role model for every player in our team. She is a hero, an absolute hero, that is how she will be remembered."
"I've told them it's OK to cry. They left everything on the field and it's a really tough way to go out."
What a dreadful way to lose! Poor, poor Laura Bassett.
Coach Mark Sampson consoles Laura Bassett. |
I was among the many millions all over the world and Britain especially who stayed up to watch the England vs Japan women's world cup semi final.Funnily,i was not nervous as i normally am when watching a team i support. That team this time being England. Before the game, all the so called experts apart from English fans, had written England off.Japan women were gonna win. They have a better passing game, they are fitter, they are defending world champions, and on and on it went. But my tip for the game was always gonna be 2-1 to England.
