The Ekiti state governor Ayo Fayose reportedly distributed about 80,000 chickens, 100,000 bags of rice and cash gift to the people of Ekiti State between Thursday and yesterday under the stomach infrastructure progamme of his administration for the Christmas celebration.Personally i am not impressed with this kind of actions. To start with, why does the governor have to be present while the distribution is taking place? So the people can see him and say,"Oh Fayose gave us this" ,as opposed to it being the state government? Second reason is,this is what the Yoruba's call "Karimi" or "eye service" like Nigerians will say.
Is one chicken and a bag of rice gonna solve a family's problem? There is a big saying that goes, give a man a fish and he will eat for a day,but teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime! Is the government's stomach infrastructure progamme meant to feed people for a week or for a life time?
Fayose might have good intentions ,i don't know, but he really needs to find a way to teach the people how to fish and abandon this charity handouts that only solves their misery for a week! Merry Christmas!
