I have always believed teenagers are very impressionable and parents should
pay attention to their state of mind. This kid Matthew must have shown signs
that all was not well, but unfortunately his parents did not notice the change in
his mood.He had been thinking of suicide for months he said in his suicide note.
A child's mood and change in a child's behavior or pattern is very
important. That poor boy must have carried that burden for ages..Can you
imagine having that on your mind and not being able to tell anybody till you
eventually take your life?
It is believed that Matthew Burdette was kicked out of class in University City High School for eating sunflower seeds on November 15th, but was not told where to go. He then proceeded to go into the school bathroom. It was in there that another student secretly filmed him allegedly masturbating in the bathroom stall.
The video was uploaded to social media sites and then immediately led to constant bullying and teasing for Matthew from other classmates.
Here's what one part of the lawsuit said:
"From the moment the video was posted, Matthew was mercilessly bullied, harassed and teased by students who had seen the video. This continued for the next two weeks."
The bereaved parents have now filed a $1 Million lawsuit against San Diego Unified School District because they believe teachers and school employees knew of Matthew's bullying and did nothing to deter it.
The claim says:
"Matthew took his life as a result of the embarrassment and humiliation caused by bullying related to the video and its distribution."
The 14-year-old did leave a suicide note which the parents summed up by saying:
"He said, I can't do school anymore. I have no friends. I don't want to kill myself but I have no friends."
The school district has released a statement on the case, and said:
"The district also adheres to the privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations related to students, families and ongoing investigations. For this reason, the district cannot provide details about Matthew Burdette's death. Our hearts and thoughts continue to be with his family and loved ones."
It is believed that the boy who recorded the initial video has been arrested although the details of that case are being kept under wraps.
The mother of Matthew said she does not hate the boy who filmed her son.She thinks he was only being silly.
The death of Matthew Burdette is so sad and unnecessary, the school could have done a lot more to prevent his death and his family will ask themselves if they should have paid more attention to the moods of Matthew to prevent his death.
