Why Ayo Fayose won the Ekiti Governorship Election

• Ayo Fayose is a man who is too close to the grassroots in his state,Ekiti.

The governorship election of Ekiti State has been and gone.And one man came out head and shoulders.Ayo Fayose.
The The people see Ayo Fayose as one of them.When an incumbent Governor is defeated in such a way that Ayo Fayose defeated Governor Kayode Fayemi,then it is no ordinary win.It's an annihilation.Ayo Fayose got majority votes in all the 16 local government areas announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.Mr Fayose had a total of 203,090 votes to defeat other candidates who participated in the exercise.

APC candidate and incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi had 120,433 votes.  Mr Peter
Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been elected Governor of Ekiti .

That  really is incredible.What does this tell us? It tell's us that the incumbent Governor did not do his job as a Governor and was not a man of the people
Here we are going to take a look at why Ayo Fayose won the Ekiti election.

It has been said that the PDP is a party that has its root deep in the ground, and that any semblance of development that you see in Ekiti today was put there by the PDP government. Suggesting that they  have a history of performance and a history of reliability and identifying with the common people in this state.

Well that sounds a bit overbearing,but some of these are joint factors why Ayo Fayose was able to win in Ekiti so convincingly.

During the campaign preceding the election,it was clear to any neutral that Ayo Fayose had people power behind him.Any time the man moved in public or was on a campaign it was like a pop star or football star making an appearance,there was always chaos of people trying to get near him and cheering him on.

On the contrary Kayode Fayemi did not attract such.It is amazing when you think of all the scandals that followed Ayo Fayose that the people could still hold him dear in their hearts.It's as if the people feel he was being prosecuted and were gonna stand by him.

It has been said that in Ayo Fayose's previous time in office as Governor, from 29 May 2003 to 16 October 2006, he had the interest of the state at heart and was responsible for many infrastructural developments as well as road constructions and a big say in educational development in the state.

This made the people of the state fall in love with him and regarded him as a true son of the soil.Any other person would not have survived the scandals that have followed Ayo Fayose ,but it seems to have made him stronger and more loved.

The incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi was not popular for so many reasons amongst voters.On many election campaigns it was said that there was no excitement in the air when Kayode Fayemi showed up..the people were very placid and unconvinced in their mannerism.

Ayo Fayose is a strong grassroots mobiliser who understands the language of the common people. His position and words resonate with them so much that they see him as part of them.He is immensely popular.
The incumbent Governor did a lot in his time in office,but he was not connected to the people,there was this great impression that his government was for the elitist,this did not go down well with the common man.There will always be more poor men than rich in any society.Once you make the people feel you are for the rich,you are heading for a fall,Ayo Fayose was strictly for the common man.He spoke and understood their language.

Across the three senatorial zones,Ayo  Fayose remains a very popular politician whom the electorate was ready to forgive for his past “sins” and give him their mandate. During Fayose's campaigns, he was pulling massive crowds anywhere he went. In fact, during the mega rally in Ado-Ekiti when President Goodluck Jonathan came to present the PDP flag to him, Fayose's vests were being sold to party members when ordinarily, they should have been distributed free of charge. In contrast, Fayemi, despite being governor for almost four years, still did not have that touch with the common man. They saw him as a “foreigner” and “intellectual” who they knew little about.
Also it is well known that Gover Kayode Fayemi is a big fan of social media..he had a great campaign strategy on twitter and facebook..But what he forgot was that there is a big voters circle that are not necessarilly social media savvy..you can't rely too much on social media because the proper grass roots man probably knows not much about this..this proved to be a great chink in Kayode Fayemi's armour.
In all the years Ayo Fayose was away from office, he never left Ekiti. He did not become a Lagos or Abuja politician and the people never forgot this,he was truly one of them and a true Ekiti son of the soil. 

It was in the air for all to see and some will even say destined that there was no way Ayo Fayose was going to lose this election.
