Nigeria coach after leading the team to the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the Eagles were eliminated by France in the round of 16 match in Brasilia, Monday, the Delta State-born tactician Keshi ,said it was time to move on after leading his country’s national team to the Africa Nations Cup trophy last year and the ongoing World Cup in Brazil reports the Vanguard newspaper.
Nigerian Captain Joseph Yobo steps down after world cup and record number of caps . |
Similarly, Super Eagles Captain, Yobo Joseph said he has had enough and can go no further as national team player. “I think I should give the younger ones the opportunity to forge ahead. I have nothing new to offer.”
"This is it. I can look back on my career with great pride," Yobo said after retiring..
"It's time to give a chance to other people to come through. Our football has a bright future and I am confident this team can achieve success sooner rather than later."
Yobo is his country's most capped player with 100 appearances and will continue to play club football.
Yobo's 10 matches at World Cup finals - a national record - have come in three tournaments, 2002, 2010 and 2014.
"I wanted to leave on a high for my country. Defeat by France was not the right way to go but I'm happy with all I've done for the national team," Yobo added added.
On his 100 caps Yoba said“it’s not about 100 caps or the the landmark. It was our desire to qualify for the quarterfinals of this tournament. Unfortunately, it was not our day.
“I thought we played more today but it wasn’t just possible/ It was not our day.”
“I have to go back to my family and face fresh challenges,” Keshi said.
After the African Cup of nations too,Keshi also resigned but was asked by the President of
the nation and some officials to withdraw his resignation. But i have a feeling this time Keshi might be serious as he has had enough of all the criticisms thrown at him by Nigerians.Meanwhile one of Nigeria's greatest footballer JJ Okocha has paid tribute to Keshi saying:" Stephen Keshi, is the best indigenous coach Nigeria has ever had" he also said we need continuity and that Keshi should under no circumstances be removed as coach of the Eagles because we didn’t qualify to the quarter-final round of the World Cup.
Speaking after the match which was played in Brasilia, Keshi said the Eagles were capable of facing any team in the world.
“We can compete with any team depending on the desire in the players.”
“There can be a lot of improvement. The players are still young. In the next two years, they will be a wonderful team.”
Keshi said he was proud of his boys despite the loss.
If "Keshi has truly resigned",he leaves as a successful coach who won the nations cup for Nigerian after 19 years and also took them to the second round of the world cup for the first time since 1998.
Thanks for the memories Stephen Keshi.
