Davido with BET award he was given at a pre-show presentation. |
- It's time BET Awards start treating African Artists with respect &stop patronizing!
- It's a common thing for BET to give African acts awards off stage & edit them from show
- Time African acts boycott BET if this doesn't change.
Davido has won the BET best African act awards to add to his MTV awards he won a few weeks ago.He sure is having a fantastic year. Davido was nominated alongside, Sarkodie,Mafikizolo,Diamond,Toofan and Tiwa Savage.
Now the downside of this award is the disgusting way BET treats African acts. How can you call yourself Black Entertainment Television and treat the cradle of blackness with such disdain and disrespect?
BET Nominates African artists in African or international categories, which is ok to an extent, but then give the awards to the winners at a pre show award,or some second hand stage! When is BET gonna start respecting African artists?
Last year Ice Prince won the best African act,And he was edited out of the main broadcast. He actually got presented his award backstage!
Now Davido has won his award and once again it's been giving to him at a pre award. Is one African category so bad or take that much space that BET Awards organizers can't fit it into a 3 hour show?
This is not the first time it's happened with BET either, every time there has been an African award or segment, the artists have been patronized.
BET Awards came out with a statement last year amid the Ice Prince controversy that presenting the award off stage does not make it any less important or indicate that they treated the artist with disrespect.BET Awards then went on to state that quite a few awards were given off stage .BET also stated how the African artists all got business class returns to
LA blah blah blah and had the chance to network and mix with the industry in the biggest musical market in the world.
Ice Prince and the BET Award he won last year and presented with back stage. |
I find all these very patronizing.BET Awards are still saying the same thing. What they are saying effectively is be thankful for what you got.We bought you business class tickets, gave you an award and gave you the chance to network in the biggest music market in the world! What more do you need?
BET have been very disrespectful and patronising to Africa! To me their award amounts to nothing but a token award to African artists. To me BET have absolutely no respect for African artists!
In the 1960's Sammy Davis jnr,Aretha Franklin,Harry Belafonte and a host of black acts were the biggest music stars in the world and some of the highest paid, but they still could not stay at most hotels where they performed or walk through the front doors of these hotels where they were paid a fortune and performed in.This is exactly what BET is doing now.We shall give you air time but not on our prime time awards, you get your awards back stage or a pre award show and be thankful for it.
I say it's time African artists stood up and boycott the BET Awards.BET Awards can stick their awards where the sun don't shine!
You would have thought America of all places will be the last place African acts will be shown this disdain and disrespect. After all what the black American or African Americans there have been through and still go through to an extent.
BET Awards will then have the audacity to call the black men on stage African Americans..Shameful and embarrassing! I hope this is put in check quickly and BET Awards resort to doing the right thing.
Even if some awards where not shown like the organizers said, these awards are all Americans and there are enough awards by Americans and to Americans shown at the award ceremony, how can you then take the only award for Africa, which is the home of the black man on a so called Black Entertainment Television show and not air that segment?
BET Awards get your act together fast..This attitude stinks to the highest heavens!
