JJ Okocha in his Frankfurt days... |
Football fans in Frankfurt were given the chance to meet two stars of European football at the My Zeil shopping centre in Frankfurt at the weekend, thanks to UEFA Europa League Global Partner, Western Union.
Western Union, a leader in global payment services brought back former Eintracht Frankfurt star Jay Jay Okocha to meet and greet fans as well as giving them an exclusive opportunity to be pictured with the UEFA Europa League trophy in a specially designed photobooth.
“Frankfurt became like a second home to me during my time there and I have great memories of the place, that goal and the fans. So when Western Union invited me back I jumped at the opportunity.“I’m really excited about going back to Frankfurt this weekend,” said the former Nigeria international who played for Eintracht Frankfurt from 1992-96, scoring 16 goals in 90 appearances, including one of the most memorable goals in Bundesliga history when he dribbled through the entire Karlsruhe SC defence before scoring against Oliver Kahn.

I’m also looking forward to getting my hands on the UEFA Europa League trophy; something I didn’t quite manage to do during my playing career.”
Eintracht Frankfurt’s game against FC Porto is arguably the tie of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32,” explained Aida Diarra, Regional Vice President, Africa at Western Union. “So taking Jay Jay and the UEFA Europa League trophy there was a great opportunity to do something for the fans and help get them even closer to the competition.”
As well as his playing links to Frankfurt, Okocha was a natural choice to also support Western Union’s PASS initiative which is converting every successful pass during its three-year Global Partner sponsorship of the UEFA Europa League into better education for vulnerable children around the world, including his home country of Nigeria
“Nigeria remains very important to me,” explained Okocha, who splits his time now between the UK and Lagos. “So I’m very happy to see the contributions Western Union is making not just on the pitch through its sponsorship of the UEFA Europa League, but also off it through its PASS initiative. I am proud to see football making a real difference in young people’s lives.”
