When is the madness and barbaric act of burning suspects alive going to stop in Africa? The so called acts of jungle justice seems to be never ending despite all the loud protests of recent times. The latest incident happened on Tuesday 14th January in Ibusa community near Asaba Delta State, where two youths suspected of stealing some cows were arrested by a vigilante group.
The two men who were identified as Chuks Ibeh and Samson Agoro were arrested by
members of a vigilante group from Asaba in the bush while trying to ferry the cows away in a pick-up van with registration number AA 165 XL.
After some interrogation, the suspects confessed that they were from Onitsha and were frequent visitors to Ibusa community bush, especially the areas where the herdsmen assemble their cattle for feeding.
After they were arrested, angry youths surrounded the men, thoroughly beat them up before pouring a substance suspected to be kerosene on them and set them ablaze.
The surprising part of the terrible and despicable act was of the Chairman of the vigilante group, Nnamdi Chikwendu, confirming the incident and appealing to the community to support the vigilante group and help achieve its goal of ridding the community of criminals....nothing wrong with this, but surely not done this way?Haven't they learnt from those poor innocent four boys who were brutally killed a year ago?
Which brings us to the security in the state and country as a whole. If we had any decent Police or security force, how long will it take before some police on their routine Patrol spot an incident like this?Or better still,a phone call to the Police should have seen these guys rescued. But who can tell you off heart a number for a Police hotline in Nigeria? The last time i checked it was something like 8 Digits or more...why can't we have 3 or 4 digits? Who is going to remember 8 digits or more? There is so much wrong in that country. But we are quick to pass laws on Gays..while the more serious issues at hand takes eternity to solve or address.
