Some say your character is becoming predictable in movies. Do you think you are becoming a stereotype?
Well, I am not a stereotype actor as people think because most fans believed that Odunlade cannot deliver lines very well aside from comic roles. But I have been able to prove them wrong. The fact that people enjoy me most when I play funny roles does not mean I cannot be good on other sets.
You do a lot of funny movies. Would you describe yourself as a comedian?
I’m not a comedian, but I make people laugh because of the way I play my roles, especially when I cry. My facial expression is enough to make you laugh. The way I express any role is always as a result of reading, understanding and digesting

whatever part I am given to play. I express it the best way I feel it should be.
Which was your first movie production?
I was strictly on stage when I started. I was on stage till 2003 or so. I had always performed on stage. We usually call people to watch us on stage. That was what we did in Abeokuta. It was only few people that produced film in Abeokuta then. So, we didn’t really have interest in movies. We appreciated that stage a lot. Now, everything has changed; everybody now wants to be in movies. When we were on stage we used to produce movies too but not as much as we performed on stage.
I can’t really say that this particular movie was the first movie I did. I can only mention a few. There was one that was produced in December 1998. Stage is live and direct. On TV, they do a lot of editing. To be sincere, I always encourage up and coming actors in the industry to start with stage performances. The stage will enable you have confidence in yourself. So, I don’t know if actors on TV cannot act on stage. What I know is that if you are ready to learn, you can do it.
You must have made huge money from your Glo deal
I will put it like this. Globacom is a company every actor wants to have a deal with and, as you know, people can exaggerate figures, but, in all, they are people worthy of their words. They make sure we are comfortable. As for the figure, it’s a no go area. I cannot tell you that. It will be unprofessional of me to start revealing what I am paid.
How has your role as a Glo ambassador affected your career?
The endorsement thing is one of the happiest things in my life. I feel fulfilled and honoured each time I remember that am an ambassador for a telecommunication company like Globacom.
Did you ever think that such endorsement could come at such a time in your career?
In fact, an endorsement was the last thing on my mind but as God wants it, here I am. I could remember vividly that it was an unexpected call I received, telling me that I had been chosen to be an ambassador. I did not even believe them. I was directing a job then. They called me and said: ‘Mr. Adekola, you have been invited to our office tomorrow morning at Adeola Odeku Street. Please come and see us there.’ I said no problem, and they told me the time was 10 am. I got there, and one of their bosses, a white man, attended to me and he asked: ‘Are you Mr. Adekola?’ I said yes, and he said: ‘You are now one of our Glo ambassadors.’ I was so happy.
Taiwo Aromokun and Odunlade Adekola.
Have you at any point dated anybody in the industry?
No. I haven’t. We are all colleagues and we work together.
But in recent times you have been romantically linked to Taiwo Aromokun, who also confirmed having a relationship with you and Mosun Filani among others?
(Cuts in) Please I don’t want to discuss that. Thank you.
What is the craziest thing a female who liked you ever did?
I can’t really be specific now because you know female fans can be very naughty and nasty at times. But one of such things a female fan did to me was to peck me and called other friends of hers to come see me and you need to see the way they all were screaming. I just joined them as well.
A lot of ladies really admire you; what do you think is your selling point?
I am very sure it’s my height, and also my being jovial and free among people. It is most definitely my smile.
Some say you are the best Yoruba actor at the moment. Do you see yourself that way?
I can’t really say precisely but I guess if I am, that means my acting skills are really paving way for me. I could remember vividly that after I featured in movies like Sunday Dagboru, Opa Kan, and Emi Nire Kan among others, every producer wanted me on his set which I’m really enjoying. So, if you say I’m the most sought after, then I claim it big time.
As a married man, does your popularity affect your marriage in any way?
My wife is familiar with what I do; she knows me very well. She copes fine. When we walk together and people greet me, she feels happy. She acts normal; she always greets them. One thing I love about my wife is that she has always been supportive of my career. She remains my back bone.
How did you meet your wife?
We met the same way a responsible guy and a responsible lady meet. The very first day I met her, I asked her out and told her: ‘I like you.’ She was just laughing, saying that she didn’t expect me to say it like that. This was about seven years ago. She said, ‘you are an actor and I know you very well. Why will you say you have interest in me; you have a lot of ladies around you?’ I said ‘well, I am telling you so you believe. I just have interest in you and I want marriage not casual relationship.’
My brother asked me, ‘why your interest in this lady?’ I said she was responsible. And responsibility is the best quality in all things and I always say this: the way you present yourself, sometimes takes you a long way in life. My wife was a very good Christian when I met her. Up till today, she still maintains that value and we both are Christians.
You act and also direct and produce. How do you mix all that?
It’s God oh; although nothing good comes easy. I just have to plan my schedule for a production job and at the end everything works out fine for me. But sincerely speaking, it is tedious and time consuming.
What is the most challenging role you have played so far in the course of your career?
For now, there is no role that is too challenging for me to interpret. Once I get the script, I ask the director what he wants and I deliver it. My memorable moments are the obvious daily happenings on the job. For instance, when a project is successful, when I was announced as a Glo Ambassador and when people see me and appreciate what I do, I enjoy moments like that.
Tell us about your roots
